The Tactics Used by The IRA in the Northern Ireland Conflict from 1969 to 1972

Presenter(s)

Larry Donohoe, Zackary Hallgren, Jessica Powers, William Amico

Abstract or Description

The IRA (Irish Republican Army) was an organization founded off the ideals of freedom from British rule. From the foundation in the 1920's it was deemed more of a group rather than a legitimate organization. However, during the years during 1969-1972 the IRA took a jump from being a radical disorganized movement to a strong and dangerous collective. During the Northern Ireland Conflict, also known as 'The Troubles,' the IRA increased and started utilizing specific tactics. Through major events, firsthand sources, and innovations through tactics we can see how the IRA truly became a force to be known during these times. These tactics during this time frame of 1969-1972 is really the key to how the IRA became organized, violent, and influential.

Hello! This was an incredibly interesting presentation. Everything you talked about felt pressing and needed, and the way the narration worked made it super easy to follow. The IRA was also apart of our presentation, but you delved very deep into the IRA and why they were a corrupt organization. Learning about all of the dark things the IRA did during their fight against the British was immersive and raw! It was a phenomenal presentation, and I am glad you were able to focus more on how the British helped people decide to join the IRA, as that is an extremely important part of the larger problem!

You did well to focus on a specific period of years within the history of this conflict. Along with these evolving IRA tactics that you did well to describe, what else did you learn about the public response to those changes, especially within the local Catholic communities? Did the public response evolve as well?

I also liked that you focused on specific years for the IRA at it allowed you to explore the time period a lot deeper than had you focused on the overall life of the IRA. I didn't realize the IRA actually had a volunteer handbook, and I found that very interesting. The narration was very clear and well planned so that it felt natural but concise and clear. It was very helpful how you included "key takeaways" that helped ensure the learner walks away with at least the most important pieces.

I really enjoyed this presentation! I liked the layout and how you presented the information in a sort of timeline. This made it really easy to follow along and under stand the topic as a whole. My group also had a large portion of our topic dedicated to the IRA so its interesting to see how you all presented your information compared to what we found.

Hi everyone! This was a great presentation! Your presentation has helped me gain a better understanding of the IRA and the PIRA. My question to you, what was England's response to Bloody Friday. The British Forces were sent to Northern Ireland to try to maintain the violence and we know the IRA retaliated against Bloody Sunday with Bloody Friday, but did England further the violence after Bloody Friday?

Bloody Friday sounds like an aggressive event one of the things I tend to notice that history is always filled with events that can be characterized as bloody.

Hello everyone, I thought that this was a terrific presentation with a very interesting topic. It is amazing the amount of violence and divisiveness that was in Ireland during this period of time. The tactics that the IRA used seemed like nothing more than acts of terror. You really did a lot of research and went into detail about the history and the legacy of the IRA. I learned a lot from your presentation.

I liked how you went into the history of the IRA and explained how they weren't just heroes of Ireland.
