Youth and Mental Health

Presenter(s)

Anamaria Dejesus, Nicole Nunes, Alicia Teixeira, Lazara Wilson

Theme

Disability rights and/or mental health

Abstract or Description

One of our goals is to show how music can be a powerful tool for those struggling with anxiety, depression, and insomnia and can be used as a tool to help those struggling with these mental health issues as well as many others. We would like to educate people on the importance of early intervention when it comes to the mental health of a child. Also, to remove the stigma that surrounds mental health, it is not always “kids being kids”. We want parents and families to be able to better access support for their child with mental health illness. The better educated families are the more support the child will receive and better improve their ability to cope and maneuver mental illness.

Anamaria, Nicole, Alicia, and Lazara, Thank you for sharing this important and insightful research! I'm struck by the straightforward yet profound effect of music. I've read similar research about how an enriched environment, including music, can help aid brain plasticity, allowing us to form new neural connections and learn new things. So important to reduce the stigma of mental health disorders and illnesses early on and get right to the work of easing the struggles so many children (and adults) are going through.
