How does poverty affect children's access to quality education?

Presenter(s)

Ava Rodriguez, Amelia Freitas, Kaylee Hirtle, Emmalee Bent

Themes

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract or Description

Childhood poverty is a long-standing epidemic but not often is it connected to access to quality education. A child's socioeconomic status dramatically impacts how they learn and where they learn. Children from low-income areas often do not have access to quality schoolhouses and materials. Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, these circumstances have only worsened.

Great job! Your group did a really good job discussing the importance of having access to resources for children to get a good education. When discussing how many children lived in poverty during covid I was blown away by the increase having going from 20% in the year 2015-2016 rising to 1.2 billion in the year 2020. Those children not having the resources to do online school during that time were not able to get the education they needed due to either not having a computer at home or not having wifi is just so sad to hear.

The statistics at the beginning of your video are CRAZY! I never would have guessed that those numbers would've been so high. 1 in 7 children live in poverty... wow. There is so much information in this video and it is all so interesting to learn. There are so many factors that go into how all of these things can effect a child. You all did an amazing job informing on your topic and getting your point across clearly.

The statistics really blew me away. Its crazy to think about how many children in america as well as all over the world were living in poverty and could affect the rest of their lives. All of this information Ive learned was insane, great job on your presentation!

Really amazing job guys! You did a great job of highlighting the importance of proper resources needed for children living in poverty. So unfortunate to hear the negative effects on children's mental and physical well being whilst living in poverty. I agree that school districts around the world should be given books and material for children in school, especially for those living in poverty. In order to break the cycle of poverty we need to take proper steps so these children can be given the right education. Really enjoyed listening to your presentation!

Great job! It's alarming how children living in poverty increased during covid19, if it was not for your presentation I would not know that 1.2 billion children were living in poverty during covid that is such a high number. I learned a lot with your presentation.

You guys did such a great job explaining how important it is to have access to good resources for children. Learning about how every 1 in 7 children live in poverty was shocking to me. That's so many children not getting the resources they need for a good education.

It was already difficult for children in poverty to obtain a quality education, and I cannot imagine how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted this, especially because of online learning. I appreciate the points that you made regarding the tools needed for online learning, and how children in poverty may not have the resources needed to participate in online learning. These limitations of education can negatively impact these children for the rest of their lives. I thought it was interesting that you went into not only the negative monetary impacts of poverty, but the negative impacts on mental health, as well. I was previously unaware that a child’s poverty level can impact the effort that they put into their education. I had never thought of this before, but it makes sense that children living in poverty often have bigger things to worry about then studying and completing their homework. I also thought that the comparison of the positive to negative comments ratios between the different economic classes was quite interesting. Thank you for sharing your research on this subject!

I like how your group was able to explore the challenges the Covid-19 Pandemic added to an education system that was already fragile. It is astounding to see how large the gaps in education quality shrink or grow depending on what zip code a family lives in. I'm glad you mentioned how poverty can affect the way a child views themselves , exploring the connections between performance and low self esteem. I also appreciated you citing research on how a teacher's unconscious bias against lower income children greatly affects their performance. This topic is one that deserves more recognition, and you have provided a great starting point for those who would like to learn more about it. I really enjoyed your presentation and think you did a wonderful job. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Everyone,
I really liked how you brought the pandemic into this issue. We need to understand that not everyone are able to access the internet, which causes these children to fall behind, and have a very hard time catching back up. I also believe that we need to make sure that these children are doing okay mentally. This issue can take a huge toll on a child's mental health and it may be something that stays with them for the rest of their lives. Your poster looks amazing and you all did a great job!

Amazing job!! I love how much you included education into this. I was really shocked by the increasing number of children living in poverty during covid. Those statistics throughout the presentation really put perspective into place. I think education during covid was challenging for many if not all students nevermind putting poverty into perspective too! I loved watching this presentation!
Great Job,

Hi everyone, I enjoyed listening to your presentation there were many similar connections to the presentation my group did. I enjoyed how you connected your topic to statistics shown know after children had to experience school online due to COVID-19 and how it effected them. Hearing the statistic rise to 1.2 billion is so sad and another 100 million children joining in 2021 is disheartening. With the pandemic technology was expected of these students, but unfair to them and their families. It was almost as if these children were teaching themselves because not everyone have the same resources at home. It is upsetting to hear abut health issues that can be caused to these children that will effect them in school. It is great to hear solutions being taken to try and help these children receive the best education they can. Well done!

Such an important topic! Education goes hand and hand with money as we can see from the statistics you provided. The more money, the better the quality of education. The less money, the poorer the quality of education. Children no matter what financial status they have, deserve to receive the best education for their development and future. I hope the resources you listed as a way to give children in poverty access to better education becomes a reality everywhere.

Hello Everyone! Your poster is very organized, and informative! My group and I discussed this topic as well, and there are many similarities that I connected too. Your connection between poverty within children and COVID-19 is very important, as we are still continuing to see the effects of COVID in our society. As you spoke upon what professionals are involved and how they can help, I certainly agree that teachers or other school professionals can best support these children. You all did a wonderful job!
