Mary Sevart, from Wichita, is the daughter of Eric and Karen Sevart and a graduate of Maize High School. Sevart is majoring in chemical engineering. During the spring of her freshman year, Sevart joined the KU Biodiesel Initiative of Professor Susan Williams, where Sevart is now a lab manager. She is also involved in research under Prof. Williams, serves as recruitment chair for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and is an undergraduate engineering ambassador. Sevart recently won first place in the SWE national poster competition and is a KU nominee for the upcoming Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. This past spring, Sevart was also awarded the NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship and an Undergraduate Research Award from the KU Center for Undergraduate Research.

My name is Eliana Pendergrass, and I am currently a Junior at Washburn University. I am majoring in Biology and minoring in Leadership Studies. On campus I am involved in the Leadership Institute and the TriBeta Biology Honor Society which has helped develop my passion for leadership in the world of STEM. I have been involved with my research project since the beginning of Fall 2021 and am continuing to do lab work with Washburn’s Department of Biology. After graduating from Washburn, I plan on pursuing an MD/Ph.D. program. My goal is to engage in medical research while also being able to help improve patient outcomes and listen to their life stories

My name is Nassima Amiar, and I am a senior studying cell and molecular biology in Biology at Kansas State University. Growing up near the Pasteur Institute of Algiers, my passion for science began to develop at a young age. The wonder of biology that began in my childhood has only deepened over the years, leading me to continue my study in Algiers and now in Kansas. I have also gained valuable hands-on research experience, especially in Dr. Loretta Johnson’s lab, where for the last year I have been studying the role of the microbiome for plant growth. Notably, this experience has not only opened the door to apply my scientific skills but also to develop them. I believe that my expanded professional skills will allow me to share my research at the Capitol and will enhance my career competencies.

Rajesh Kandel is an international student from Nepal. Rajesh is graduating from Washburn University with his Bachelor’s in ACS chemistry (with a mathematics minor). Since Spring 2021, Rajesh has been working on his current research project with Dr. Hoang Nguyen, which entails building a micro Fabry-Perot optical cavity to amplify Raman signal for the chemical characterizations of nanoscale materials. To complete this project, he was awarded the Star Trainee Award from the Kansas Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence. Outside research, Rajesh works as a tutor in the chemistry department and member at Washburn Student Government Association. Rajesh plans to go to Graduate school to conduct research on water purification and the reduction of greenhouse gasses to solve the energy crisis.
