Are Parking Lots Cooking Fort Collins? – Correlation Analysis of Parking Lots and Heat Island Effects using Satellite Imagery and Open Street Maps
Junhwan Kim, Hermela Darebo, Jackson Holden
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is a critical environmental issue that impacts urban areas worldwide. It refers to the phenomenon where urban regions experience higher temperatures than their surrounding rural areas due to increased heat absorption and retention. In this project, we studied the correlation between the UHI index computed from satellite images (Landsat 8 and 9) and structure data from Open Street Maps (OSM) in Fort Collins, CO for two recent years, 2021 and 2022. Our analyses show that with Fort Collins, parking lots and UHI are correlated with X using the X2 correlation.
