An MIT Experience: Demonstrating and Testing Fiber and Diffraction Grating Coupling on Revolutionary Photonic Chips at MIT

Presenter(s)

Sarah Auriemma, John Gilmore, Adam Jabak, Alec Milord

Abstract or Description

The new Photonics program at Bridgewater State University has opened opportunities for undergraduate students to have hands-on experience with photonic chips. Dr. Serna offered a unique opportunity and invited several students to an introductory bootcamp at MIT to put Bridgewater on the map as a top photonics institution. As part of this experience, the students tested various learning tools, to help the next generation of undergraduate students learn about integrated photonics. They analyzed fiber coupling, wave propagation effects, the physics of nano-interferometers, waveguides, ring resonators, and grating couplers.

This looks like an amazing experience for our BSU students! Let's keep our relationship with MIT strong, Samuel. Students, congratulations for being the first cohort of students to participate in the bootcamp!

So intriguing, the challenges of the dynamic system: Cut size while cutting losses created by cutting size too much. So exciting, Samuel, seeing the beautifully presented work and story -- powerful graphics, the helpful schematics, and the evocative photos convey the energy and curiosity of everyone involved.
