We explored the forensic advising approach at Bridgewater State University (BSU) and its impact on transfer student retention from Fall 2018 (pre-COVID) to Fall 2024. Moreover, focusing on key advising strategies, we assess how BSU's retention rates for transfer students have evolved, particularly during this transformative period. The Transfer Services Office has implemented several innovative and targeted initiatives, including comprehensive advising practices, enhanced outreach through Transfer Ambassadors, and the introduction of an advising guide specifically designed to help students navigate their transition. The data obtained provides valuable insights into the improvement in student retention rates, particularly in first-to-second semester and first-to-second year retention, as a result of the more personalized and proactive advising approach introduced. We have noted that overall satisfaction is a vital element of retention (Roberts & Styron, 2010). The Transfer Services team coordinated a comprehensive outreach campaign that aims to assist students struggling with their transition at BSU and help them navigate various campus resources while addressing any barriers that may hinder their retention. As part of this coordinated initiative, the Transfer Services Office employs a collaborative approach involving Transfer Advisors, Transfer Student Ambassadors, and faculty support. Tailored to each student's needs, we've developed a customized advising guide starting in Fall 2020 to ensure they are fully informed about available resources and academic processes. Advising during a student's first term is crucial, as delaying it to the second term can significantly reduce retention rates, ultimately lowering the likelihood of graduating within the average 4 years (H. Yang et al., 2021). After engaging with these support services, students leave with a stronger sense of belonging, satisfaction, and a better understanding of BSU's resources and procedures. As a result of Transfer Services' ongoing efforts to implement various student support measures, data shows substantial improvements in retention over the past few years. By building on the strategies and interventions highlighted in this study, we aim to reduce achievement gaps and foster experiences encouraging transfer students to persist in their educational journey at BSU.
