Abstract or Description

In the context of COVID-19 cases globally, there is a lack of agreement on whether wearing a face mask is an effective physical interference against disease transmission. This study focuses on how the MNSU, Mankato community makes decisions about when to wear a mask and general campus attitudes surrounding the topic. We used a survey with multiple choice and open-ended questions to assess the campus’s beliefs and decision-making regarding mask usage. Currently, there is insufficient understanding on the behavioral patterns of mask use in the general population for the prevention of COVID-19. Data acquired from this project will be an important step forward in understanding what factors the MNSU, Mankato community considers when deciding when to wear a mask. This may be applied to larger, similar population groups.

This is an interesting study. Nice work with the research. I share your surprise about the results from CSET and AHN students. I wonder what the implications of your study are. Do you believe that the study suggests ways in which a university administration or city officials could respond or communicate more effectively in assisting populations in their understanding of masks? If so, how?

Yes it was very interesting to learn the mask behaviors of our respondents especially, from the CSET and AHN students. The results from our study that seem to have the surprising results and suggest we need further education on masks would be the bar graph at the bottom of the poster. As most respondents (82.5%) believe they follow the proper mask protocol when indoors. However, to the contrary over half of respondents (57.5%) say they do not wear a mask when indoors with friends that they do not live with, which is not proper protocol. This could be a direct correlation with the raise in cases in Mankato. This data suggests that University should pursue farther education on masks and COVID-19 for students, such as the alcohol courses on D2L that freshmen are required to complete in the first semester at MNSU. As students may be miss informed on proper mask protocol. This also suggest that the MNSU community may not be the only community in Mankato not following protocol. In order to help slow the spread beyond just the MNSU community city officials could invest in more awareness for proper mask protocol, in such forms as advertising proper protocol in public spaces .
