Soil pollution with heavy metals raises concern over crop uptake of heavy metals and associated food safety risks. Fungi are abundant and are often involved in detoxification of pollutants in soils. Thus, this project aims to investigate the biosorption of heavy metals and underlying mechanisms by various soil fungi using culturing and batch sorption experiments. By identifying potential fungi species for adsorbing heavy metals and consequently decreasing metal uptake by crops, this project could help develop strategies for mitigating heavy metal pollution in soils.
