Stevie Can See: How misinformation about blindness led to the

conspiracy theory that Stevie Wonder can see

Presenter(s)

Kai Morgan

Abstract or Description

Disabilities can make doing certain things harder for an individual, but they often do not make a person helpless. Many celebrities have circulated rumors that Stevie Wonder is not actually blind, because he does things they do not expect a blind person would do, like catch a falling object or take pictures. The reason people believe the conspiracy theory that Stevie Wonder is not actually blind means that they believe harmful misconceptions about blindness and other disabilities. Most of the reasons people give Stevie Wonder is not actually blind boil down to the belief that blind people are incapable of doing much of what seeing people can do. Having a better understanding of blindness and other disabilities can prevent harmful conspiracy theories like this one from emerging.
