THAAD is Bad?

Oral Presentation
This project attempts to answer the question "how do Chinese/South Korean newspapers show the impacts of THAAD (terminal high altitude aerial defense) on Sino-Korean relations?" Previous research has covered the impacts of American missile defense in countries such as Poland and Taiwan, while research into THAAD in South Korea is limited. I gathered 40 newspaper articles, 10 from the Korean Times, 10 from Korea Herald, 10 from China Daily and 10 from Global Times China. I thematically coded the economic, political, and cultural impacts the newspapers claimed resulted from THAAD installation. Chinese newspapers claim the United States will use THAAD’s radar capabilities to spy on Chinese military activity, while South Korean newspapers claim the system will only be used as defense from North Korean missiles. This study will recognize if alliance theory and security dilemma theory are applicable to THAAD in South Korea, and weigh if THAAD’s increased defense capabilities outweigh the Chinese government’s protest of the defense system.
