Gender-Differences In Memory
Naciima Diriye
In this review, the memory differences between males and females will be investigated. Specifically, published research will be reviewed to identify memory tasks in which performance differences between males and females have been identified. For example, meta-analytic research suggests males have better memory for spatial stimuli (Voyer et al., 2007). Other research has identified advantages among females for recalling social stimuli, such as one’s appearance (Horgan et al., 2004). I will also review the published research to consider the most promising causal mechanisms for these performance differences. Causal mechanisms suggested in the literature include both biological (i.e., hippocampal differences between sexes) and social (i.e., females may differentially attend to social stimuli) bases.
