Through research of an emerging concept with major potential in the computer science world, I have created a comprehensive overview with details of each part of the process. In my project, I discuss quantum potential, current risks, types of errors, outdated error mitigation strategies, and the newest quantum gate optimization tactics (with one still being experimental) that also show promise. I believe that quantum computing is one of the biggest topics in computer science currently, with the recent boom of it in the past two decades. However, since the subject is still relatively new and is constantly being advanced, I believe that my research of over a dozen research papers (which have a range of publishing dates from a decade to less than a year ago) gives viewers an up-to-date look at the computing world, whether it's through the eyes of an industry professional or a computing novice. Also, I have showcased my work through explanations and examples that a novice could understand in hope of encouraging interest in my viewers, and making sure people newer to computer science, especially children, would look at quantum computing with curiosity rather than confusion or a fear of the complexity involved.

Young Changemaker Award Submission Taylor Guenther For teenagers in today’s world, getting enough sleep is a constant problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 72% of high school students do not get enough sleep on school nights [4]. Teenagers need the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night, which is essential for brain development and both physical and mental health. Without this sleep there can be consequences, such as “...negative effects on the way they think, react and learn. It also has an impact on their ability to control their emotions and get along with adults” [2]. Being sleep-deprived can make cognitive functions slower and less effective which can harm academic performance and focus. Not getting enough sleep takes a toll on teenagers, both at school and at home. This impacts student’s relationships with their parents, family, and friends.
To try and increase the amount of sleep they get, some teenagers turn to over-the-counter sleep aids, such as antihistamines and melatonin. Both can have side effects. Antihistamine-based products are the most common, and teenagers have easy access to them. These antihistamines affect the histamine receptor in the brain, which plays a role in wakefulness [1]. When antihistamines are taken, you can continue to feel sleepy and weak the next day. Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces when exposed to darkness [3]. Taking melatonin supplements can encourage sleep. There are risks to taking melatonin, especially in children. Children are not recommended to use it regularly, as melatonin may affect reproductive hormones [1]. Over-the-counter sleep aids can be dangerous and have negative side effects, and an alternative is needed to keep teenagers safe. Continued research to try and find alternative sleep aids is becoming increasingly important. By teaching communities about this problem and sharing the dangers of melatonin and antihistamines, we can protect teenagers and help them effectively increase their nightly sleep with safer alternatives.
